August 14th- 20th Fishing Report

The Devil’s Lake fishing report for the week August 14th to August 20th, 2017. Brought to you by Mitchell’s Guide Service. The largest and most experienced professional Guide Service serving the Devils Lake Basin.

It has been an incredible week here at Devil’s Lake, which will be remembered as the August 2017 Pike-A-Losa! The week the big northern pike definitely went on the bite. Quite a number of pike in the 15 to 25 lb range were caught and released by our guided groups. Some of which went to the taxidermist. Numerous 40 – 47 1/2″ pike were caught by MGS clients Most of which were incidental catches while fishing walleye. The big pike were definitely feeding on walleye. One guide reported a pike weighing in the mid twenties attacking a 15 inch walleye being reeled in by a client.

All in all it was a great week of fishing although the bite did taper off a bit by week’s end. Excellent catches of eater walleye were made once again by our clients. Larger walleye were caught and released in the 25 to 30 inch range also. The quality of the pike and walleye was very good. There is an abundance of forage in our system right now and it has resulted in very healthy, fat walleye as well as stout, heavy larger Pike.

With the weeds dying off and being torn loose by the wind crank baiting has become a bit more difficult in many areas. Weed fouled lines will do that. Bottom bouncers and spinners continue to produce well throughout the system. As soon as the die off of weeds is completed and the water clears of floating weeds crank baiting should fire up even better than it has been.

As the lake cools the bite will change a bit and anglers will be forced to adapt to see continued success. Structure fishing is already good and will continue to improve as the weed beds disappear. Open water trolling should also get easier with the weeds disappearing. Fishing all around has been great, and the bigger fish being pulled out of the lake will hopefully continue all the way through the winter.

Crank baits are becoming less effective as the weed break loose, but it should pick back up after the lake clears. Spinners and deep jigging is still effective, and should continue to succeed as the water cools down.
