July 24

What a great month of fishing it has been. Practically every presentation imaginable has been working as of late. Whether it is lindy rigs, slip bobbers, jigging, pulling spinners or pulling cranks, they have all been very effective when targeting walleye and northern pike. The fishing techniques our guides from Mitchell’s Guide Service have been utilizing the most is trolling spinners connected to bottom bouncers. When using this method, baiting the hook with half a night crawler, a leech, or plastics such as Northland Impulse and Berkley Gulp! have all worked well. Depths for this method has continued to range from 7 to 12 feet, with some people going past 15 feet. The best speed to troll spinners is 1.2 to 1.5 mph. Trolling Crankbaits such as Rapala and Salmo hornets have also been producing a lot of nice fish. Running crankbait at 2.3 to 2.5 mph in depths of 7 to 12 feet of water has been the key.

Areas to target on Devils Lake include flooded roads such as the Old Minnewaukan Road (Golden Highway), and roads in New Mill Bay and Six Mile Bay to name a few. The edges of weed beds are another great place to target as well as flooded timber. The north end of Six Mile bay, Doc Hagens, and New Mill Bay all have excellent weed beds to target. Trolling along Highways 20 and 57 are also a good place to target.

Some of the hottest fishing of the year is going on right now on Devils Lake. We still have some dates with Mitchell’s Guide Service available for the last few days of July and into August if you want to get out and experience some great action.
