The Devils Lake Fishing Report for the week of July 24th through the 30th, 2017. Brought to you by Mitchell’s Guide Service. Devils Lake’s largest and most experienced professional Guide Service.
Fishing this week has been excellent, reports and photos from our guides show tons of success on the lake. This past week our guided clients have gone home happy with limits of walleye and a few trophies for the wall. As the weather has heated up so has the fishing. This last week we only experienced one minor front coming through which shut down the bite for a little over half a day. Otherwise it’s been a week to remember!
Fish are being caught in diverse locations, from as shallow as 6 to 10 ft of water to as deep as 25 to 35 feet of water. Spinners and bouncers have taken over as the dominant presentation here on Devil’s Lake this time of year. While some crank baiting is still being done, expect the crank baiting to fire up even better towards the end of August. Deep-water jigging continues to produce some fish for anglers wishing to try their luck at that.
Daily our guides have been literally scattering to the various corners of this system seeking out their favorite locations and all have reported excellent fishing. Obviously we are a guide service and the service we sell is guided fishing. If you are new to Devil’s Lake a day or two or three on the water with one of our guides will acclimate you to the fishing here.
With over 230,000 acres of water, Devils Lake and the adjoining waters of the Devils Lake Basin can be very intimidating to the newcomer or those struggling with the vastness of Devil’s Lake as too just where to start. With our expanded guide staff for 2017 we have openings in August, and if August 2016 is any indicator and the fantastic bite we’ve had so far in 2017, this August should be one to remember. Mitchell’s Guide Service, combined with Woodland Resort also offers packages that include lodging and meals for those seeking a vacation package. Whether a one day trip, a two or three-day trip for two to four people or a large corporate outing, we have 12 full-time guides and nearly double that of part-time guides waiting to serve you. Fishing is still very good in the southern parts of the lake, as well as Pelican Lake. The main presentation is still spinners, bottom bouncers, and night crawlers. The crank bait bite should increase in the coming weeks. Trolling with spinners in deeper water, anywhere from 10-30 feet is ideal.
