We are still seeing ice around 18-20 inches here in Creel Bay. This warm weather that we have had lately can cause some soft spots throughout the lake. Late ice is usually brings some of the best fishing we experience on the ice, however it is softer ice. Even though ice is holding steady right now, look for ice conditions to deteriorate quickly in the next 2 weeks. We are looking at temps this weekend in the 40s and 50s. Avoid crossing old shallow roads, sandbars, and slushy areas. These areas can have soft and dangerous ice.
The Perch have been tough the last few days. We have been finding and marking these perch, but the bite has been a little on the light side. Small tungsten jigs with minnow heads or wax worms have been the best presentation for these tough perch as of late. Spring-tip bobbers can be really useful when trying to catch these light biting perch. Most perch have been targeted and caught anywhere from 20-45 feet deep.
Look to target walleyes around sunrise and sunset. Buckshots and Jigging Raps tipped with minnow heads are still the best presentations used for Walleyes. Look to target structure from 10-25 feet deep. If has been a while since marking a fish, try using a lure with loud rattles. Sometimes being obnoxious with a flashy/loud lure for a short period of time can gain the attention of nearby fish.
Please use extreme caution from here on out. The 15 day forecast as of now does not show a day with temps under 30 degrees and ranging all the way up to 54 with some rain mixed in.
Use this upcoming nice weather to get out and catch some fish on the ice!
