September 9

September walleyes are in full swing on Devils Lake. Whether it is trolling with cranks or bottom bouncers and spinners along the weed beds, or vertical jigging the bridges and towers around Devils Lake, both techniques have been very successful the past couple of weeks.

The crank and spinner bite has been most successful in shallow waters of less than 12 feet. The larger fish with this technique have been coming as close to the weed beds as possible. Area like this include Six Mile Bay, Pelican Lake and Lake Irvin to name a few. Spinner colors include any with yellow or orange, but it has not been limited that. Try tipping your spinners with either night crawlers, Gulp! or Northland Impulse. Crankbait colors include firetiger, perch, and yellow perch.

Many anglers have been having success by jigging one of the many bridges located around Devils Lake, including Hwy 20 and 57, Six Mile Bay and the Mauvas Coulee Bridge. Jigs tipped with minnows and night crawlers have been working well. Also try Rapala jigging raps in sizes 7 and 9.

It has been a fantastic year of fishing and as guide Mike “Spider” Shell would say “It was a good day (year) for everyone except the walleye”.

There is still a few days open for fishing for the rest of this year and we are now taking reservations for fishing trips next year. It is never too early to call and book your reservation and reserve your fishing guide for next year.
